One of my favorite things to do each Christmas is create our family Christmas card. I usually take pictures of the kids myself with my big girl camera or, like last year’s card, I have one of my photographer friends take pictures of us.
Well this year we had a family photo shoot planned and all hell broke loose. The kids were both sick and my husband got stuck at work the night before and didn’t get home till 5 am. Not exactly the makings of a pretty family picture! It was time for plan B.
A few months ago we went to a wedding for one of my husband’s police officer friends. They had sent out a Save-the-Date magnet months before and we loved it. It was a 5×7 magnet and it was a mugshot of the couple dressed in wedding attire. They were holding a mugshot ID board that had the date of their wedding. The rest of the magnet said “These two are headed for a life sentence…” and gave specifics about the wedding.
My husband loved that Save the Date card and it hung on our fridge months after the wedding. And it totally inspired this card. We contacted the groom and found out that he’d purchased the mug shot background and was willing to lend it to us. My husband borrowed the ID boards from the police department and went to work spelling out our messages. Bonus points if you can figure out what the numbers mean… 🙂 (FYI–they haven’t been used since approximately 1989. Everything is digital now!)
One morning right after Thanksgiving we set up my camera on self timer mode and took a bunch of pictures. The kids were really good sports and we had a blast. In between pictures we’d call out what to do and hope they cooperated. “SMILE! Ok, now SILLY FACE! Now, ANGRY!”
My friend Becca at Jumping Jax Designs designed the cards (she’s a graphic design genius, so check her out!) and we are so so happy with the final product. And so were our family and friends. The cards went out last weekend and the response has been wonderful. I’m so happy people enjoyed them as much as we do!
